Remote Desktop Connection

Windows

The Windows 10 operating system comes with a remote desktop client already installed so you don't need to install additional software. To launch the application, type "remote desktop" in the search box on the taskbar and then select Remote Desktop Connection. This selection will open the remote desktop connection dialog box.

SETTING A: Create a connection setting to the PHS-Windows server

  • Type the server name: phs-windows.stanford.edu in the "Computer" field.
  • Click the "Show Options" button on the bottom-left corner and continue click the "Save As..." button
  • Give a name to the connection shortcut, e.g., PHS-Windows, and save it into your Desktop

SETTING B: Create a connection setting to the PHS-Linux server

  • Type the server name: phs-linux.stanford.edu in the "Computer" field.
  • Click the "Show Options" button on the bottom-left corner and continue click the "Save As..." button
  • Give a name to the connection shortcut, e.g., PHS-Linux, and save it into your Desktop

Mac

Click ☞ this link to get the Microsoft Remote Desktop 10 from the App Store and follow the installation instructions.

SETTING A: Create a connection setting to the PHS-Windows server

  • Click the plus (+) button at the top left and select "Desktop".
  • Type the server name: phs-windows.stanford.edu in the "PC name" field.
  • Give a name to the connection setting, e.g., PHS-Windows, in the "Friendly name" field.

SETTING B: Create a connection setting to the PHS-Linux server

  • Click the plus (+) button at the top left and select "Desktop".
  • Type the server name: phs-linux.stanford.edu in the "PC name" field.
  • Give a name to the connection setting, e.g., PHS-Linux, in the "Friendly name" field.

Ubuntu Linux

The Ubuntu operating system also comes with its own native remote desktop client. To launch the application, type "remote desktop" in the search box on the dock and then select Remmina Remote Desktop Client. If you can't find the application, follow ☞ these instructions to do the installation.

SETTING A: Create a connection setting to the PHS-Windows server

  • Open the "Remote Desktop Preference"
  • Type the server name: phs-windows.stanford.edu in the "Server" field.
  • Select the protocol to RDP - Remote Desktop Protocol.
  • Give a name to the connection setting, e.g., PHS-Windows, in the "Name" field.

SETTING B: Create a connection setting to the PHS-Linux server

  • Open the "Remote Desktop Preference"
  • Type the server name: phs-linux.stanford.edu in the "Server" field.
  • Select the protocol to RDP - Remote Desktop Protocol.
  • Give a name to the connection setting, e.g., PHS-Linux, in the "Name" field.
